Three skeleton keys are drawn on a plain light background, each with a heart-shaped bow and an ornate scrolled shaft. The larger key on the left is shaded in black and grey and has a number 3 on its shaft, while the smaller key at the top right is inked in black. The key at the lower right is outlined and shaded in pink and purple, with a small heart cut into its bit.

The man set three keys on my counter and said he didn't want them copied, only measured. He wanted to know, he said, exactly how much of the world each one had been meant to open. I told him measuring was a slow way to lose a morning. The big one was black with grey worked into its scrolls, a 3 scratched into the shaft like a boy's tally on a wall. The second was smaller, inked dark and worn down at the bow. The third was pink and purple, the colour of a motel sign at dusk, with a heart notched out of its bit.

I clamped the black one first and took my calipers to the teeth. They were cut by hand, uneven as a country road, and I told him so. He nodded as though I'd confirmed something. The pink key had the heart, and when I held it to the window the light came through the notch and laid a small red coin on the bench. He said his mother had carried that one in her coat for forty years and never once used it on anything. I wrote the numbers on a card and didn't ask what she had been keeping safe.

When I finished the third blank, I fitted it to the tin box he'd brought, the one that had been rattling under his truck seat since Needles. It turned without a sound, and the lid lifted on nothing but a folded map of the Mojave and a ring of brass nails. He laughed until he coughed. I hung the three cards on the nail above my till, the pink one nearest the window, where the sun comes through at four and throws its heart across the floor.
