Four ornate arrow designs on parchment
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
Four vertical arrows are drawn in solid black, each with a different ornate head built from circles, spokes and rounded petal shapes. The fine, even linework and open circles give the set a precise, geometric look. The arrows sit evenly spaced on an aged cream background inside a dark ornate frame.

The gale had been working at the gallery glass since dusk, and you climbed the iron stair with lamp oil on your sleeve, counting rungs the way old Mr Pryce taught you. Four arrows hung on brackets outside the lantern room, each pointing a different way, their heads cut from the same brass patterns of rings, spokes and petals that the lens-maker in Greenock had sent over for the Admiralty. Mr Pryce had said they were for the supply boats, so the crews could read the rock from a mile out before the swell hid it.

Tonight the wind wanted them. The third arrow had already torn loose from its bracket and lay in the scupper like a dropped wheel, its spokes bent. You crouched with numb fingers and fitted the bolt back through the iron, swearing softly at the rust. Beyond the glass the sea was white to the horizon, and the mainland lights went out one by one, as if someone were walking along the coast turning them down.
In the logbook, under a column of tide times in Mr Pryce's cramped hand, you found the entry you had been avoiding. It was dated the winter he went ashore for good. Set the arrows to the harbour, not the rock. The rock knows where it is. You had read it a dozen times and still did not know whether it was a joke or a warning.
You went back out onto the gallery as the squall eased. The fourth arrow, with its long petal head, had swung round on its bracket. You put your hand on the cold brass and turned it until the lamp caught the rings and threw their shadows across the black water, a little constellation of wheels pointing towards the harbour lights that had just come back on.
