Three outlined roses on a side torso
Botanical · Other · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows three open roses in a row, each with layered petals and a spiral centre, joined by clusters of pointed leaves and small stems. It is drawn in black outline with no shading or fill, so the skin shows through the open petals. The design runs horizontally across the side of the torso above the hip, with a grey fabric at the top of the frame and a navel and belly piercing visible on the right.

The miller's boy came down from the edge of Harrow Wood with a bramble scratch on his cheek and a message he would not say aloud until he reached the green. Old Hester at the forge heard him out, then sent him back for the ink pot and a clean quill, because whatever the wood wanted, it wanted drawing rather than speaking.

Three roses, she told him, set in a row the way the hedge grew along the lane. Each one opened right to its middle, petals folded over petals like the hems of a good cloak, and at the heart of each a single spiral turning inward. Pointed leaves gathered between them in little crowds, and the stems ran thin as cotton thread. No shadow, no colour. The wood had no use for paint. Wherever the lines stopped, the skin showed through, and that was the whole point of it, Hester said, because a thing left open can still be seen into.
The miller's daughter had gone into the wood at Candlemas and not come out. Everyone had searched the ditches and called her name down the rides. Hester did not search. She inked the three roses on a square of calfskin and pinned it to the mill door with the spirals turned north, east and west, and told the boy to say nothing more until somebody asked him properly.
Nobody asked for nine days. On the tenth morning the miller's wife found the calfskin gone from the door and three pale roses pressed into the frost of the sill, their petals open and their centres turning toward the wood. Down the lane, a girl was walking home with her boots full of mud, and the leaves along the hedge had already begun to bend after her.
