Three plumeria flowers in outline
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
Three five-petalled plumeria flowers are drawn in thin black outline, overlapping in a loose cluster, with one flower at the top, one at the centre left and one at the lower right. The linework is smooth and even, with small interior strokes suggesting the petal creases, and the design is filled with the bare skin tone rather than shading. The photograph is taken close up against a plain skin background, with the design centred in the frame.

The cuttings came off the boat in a biscuit tin lined with wet moss, and Mabel Crane carried them up the lane to Hollin Farm as if they might spill. Her uncle had sailed to a country where the flowers smelled sweet enough to make a person dizzy, and he had sent three sticks with a note saying they would not live through an English winter. Nobody at the farm believed him, least of all Old Aske, who wanted the wall for his pears.

They planted them in the last week of August, under the south wall where the late apples ripened, and by October the leaves had gone soft and black at the edges. Mabel wrapped each stem in sacking through the frost and talked to them at night, which the labourers thought foolish. In the third summer the nearest tree put out a single cluster of flowers, five petals opening flat like the fingers of a hand that has let go, and then the other two followed as though they had only been waiting for permission.
Aske came round the wall with his basket that week and stopped dead. He said his mother used to tell of a woman who had gone over the water and come back with three blossoms behind her ears, and that the flowers would stay as long as someone in the family kept them. Mabel laughed at him. Then she went into the orchard, picked the first fallen petal from the grass and pressed it inside the tin lid, where it stayed brown and flat for forty years.
Late in the summer the apples come down onto the grass and the three trees throw their white flowers over everything, and the pickers wear them behind their ears without asking whose they are.
