Cartoon cat with bow on the lower abdomen
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small cartoon cat face with a bow on top and three whiskers on each side is tattooed on a bare lower abdomen or hip. The linework is thin and even in black ink, with little or no shading, and two silver studs sit beside the design. The photo is taken at close range against a pink top and denim jeans, with the tattoo placed near the centre of the frame.

The bow had slipped sideways again, so Enid Parr knelt on the wet path and fixed it back between the cat's ears with two fingers. The cat allowed this the way it allowed most things, eyes half shut, whiskers doing the work of a sulk. Three sprigs of sweet pea hung over the water butt behind it, and the shed door stood open on the smell of creosote and cold tea.

Her husband had bought the ribbon at the market in Otley, the same spring he brought the cat home, though neither of them could agree on which had come first. He said the cat had turned up on the compost heap in March and refused to leave. Enid said it had been sold to them by a man with a van and no receipt, and that a cat who accepted a bow without complaint was not to be trusted. Forty years of that argument had worn smooth, the way the path had worn under their boots.
This morning the cat sat by the bean canes, watching the blackbird with a patience Enid recognised. She had been waiting too, for the dew to come off the leaves and for the moment the bird forgot anyone was watching. Everything in the bed was waiting for something.
When the blackbird finally dropped to the soil, the cat did not move. It only stretched one paw, slowly, then lifted its head to look at the bow, as if it had decided something. The ribbon came loose in the breeze and settled on the fence, where a sweet pea had already climbed through the loop. Enid left it there. The cat walked off down the path with its tail up, and nobody, least of all the bird, needed telling which of them had won.
