Three poppies in fine line ink
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows three poppy blooms arranged in a loose diagonal cluster, one at upper left, one at centre right and one at lower left, each with a detailed dark centre and layered, ruffled petals. The linework is fine and uniform with hatching along the petal edges and light veins, and there is no shading or colour. The design sits centred on a plain white background, with the flowers filling most of the frame.

The seed packets had been Aunt Maud's, and so had the rule about the cutting: never take more than three heads from one plant, or the bed would sulk for a year. Nell counted them out on the potting bench while the kettle ticked on the stove behind her. Three poppies, the papery ones with the ruffled hems that looked like they had been folded and slightly crumpled in a drawer. She had been saving them since June, watching the green knobs swell until the petals pushed through like a fist opening.

The wedding was Saturday, in the church at the bottom of Harrow Lane, and the vicar had already asked twice whether the flowers would be ready. Nell's sister Ruth had wanted white roses, the shop kind, sprayed and perfect. Nell had said the bed would give them poppies or nothing, and Ruth had laughed in the way that meant she had lost an argument she was glad to lose.
On Friday night Nell sat on the back step with a jar of water and the three blooms laid across her knee. She pressed the first flower flat between two sheets of blotting paper, weighted it with Maud's brass doorstop, and wrote the date on the corner of the paper in pencil. The second she tucked into a buttonhole of her cardigan for no reason she could name. The third she left whole, its dark centre open to the sky, its petals already beginning to loosen at the edges.
By morning the whole bunch had dropped a few petals on the flagstones, and she swept them into her palm and carried them down the lane anyway.
