Three small birds on an inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of an inner wrist and forearm, with a sleeve cuff visible at the bottom edge. Three small black bird silhouettes in flight sit in a loose diagonal group, each drawn with thin, clean linework and no shading. The image is in black and white, and the tiled floor and furniture in the background are softly out of focus.

Brother Anselm had kept the bird ledger for thirty-one winters, and the abbot had never once asked him to stop. Each evening after Compline he climbed the north stair to the scriptorium, unlatched the shutter that faced the mudflats, and wrote down whatever crossed the grey strip of sky between the chapel tower and the sea wall. Curlew, eider, the odd heron standing in the shallows like a bent nail. Rain went in a separate column.

The novice Edwin came up one evening with a lamp and a question. Why count, when the birds never stopped to be counted? Anselm did not look up from the page. "Because the ledger is for whoever comes after," he said, "so he knows the sky was looked at." Edwin shrugged and held the lamp higher, and together they watched the light go off the water.
Three gulls came low over the sea wall then. They were not the great scattered flocks of October but a loose broken line of three, one drifting a little behind and then catching the others at the corner of the tower. Anselm watched until they were only a thought against the cloud. He dipped his pen and wrote three, and then, because the column had always needed a name at the bottom, he wrote Osric beside it, the brother who had first taught him to tell a brent goose from a barnacle.
Edwin read the line over his shoulder and said nothing. Below the window the tide turned and began its slow climb up the causeway, and the ink dried at the same pace as the last of the light.
