Three small birds in flight on the wrist
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of the inner wrist with three small black bird silhouettes flying in a loose diagonal row, each a different size and angle. The birds are solid black shapes with minimal detail, and the skin around them is warm and softly lit. The background is out of focus, with the wrist filling most of the frame and the tattoo placed in the centre-left.

The house at Crabbe's Reach had taken in summer visitors since her husband's time, and most of them left the way the weather did, all at once and without asking. Mr Ansell, in the back room, had been the first to tell her about the birds. He was a retired signalman with a bad hip and an opinion about everything, and he said starlings flew in the shape of a question, and it was only the stragglers who got an answer.
On the Sunday he came down with his case already strapped and asked for his bill in the same breath as his tea. Maud gave him the figure without looking at the ledger. He paid in coins, setting them on the oilcloth one at a time, and when he reached the last he pushed the whole pile across the table to her with one finger.
Afterwards she stood at the window with the tea towel over her shoulder. Out past the groyne the flock had found its line again, three dark marks slanting west, and the smallest kept pace at the back, close enough that she could not have said which of them was following which.
