Three small stars on the wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Three small solid black stars sit on the inner wrist, with one slightly larger star above and to the right of the other two. The hand holds an open book with a printed page visible beside it, and the warm indoor light lies softly across the skin. The composition is tight on the wrist, with the tattoo placed near the centre of the frame.

Dear Ysolde, the abbot has put me in the scriptorium for the winter, which means my fingers are more ink than flesh and the brazier smokes whenever the wind comes off the fen. Brother Aldric says my hand is too slow for the psalters, so I was given the margins instead, the small work nobody checks. Yesterday I was told to rule a page of the star tables for the new calendar, and I found myself making three dots where the old copy had a cluster of stars with no names.

Brother Osric saw them and laughed. He said a copyist who draws stars in the margin is either praying or hiding from the work, and I said both. He carried the page to the abbot expecting a scolding, and came back with a different answer. The abbot wants those three kept, and a fourth drawn larger above and to the side of them, because they are the stars the pilgrims steered by when the causeway to the coast went under water.
I did not know that. I have lived here six years and never once looked up from the desk long enough to ask. Now I walk to the cloister each night before compline, find the larger one low over the wall, and hold my inky wrist up to it until the bell goes. Tell Mother the psalters are coming on well, and that I have started to read the sky.
