Fine black script tattoo on a forearm reading 'i spent my life folded between the pages of books', with an open book behind it.

Book quote script on a forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single line of lowercase black script runs diagonally across the inside of a forearm, reading 'i spent my life folded between the pages of books.' The thin, even linework is crisp, with no shading or fill. Behind the arm an open book shows a chapter heading reading SIXTY-TWO, and a cover with a painted blue eye, all in soft, slightly warm natural light.

The keeper found him at the foot of the east stacks, knees drawn up to his chin, an almanac open across his lap at chapter sixty-two. His lamp had guttered out hours before. The king had sealed the east library after the flood, then sealed it again after the bindery fire, so by now the only visitors were rats and Maud Ferrow, who had never once asked permission to enter anything.

She lowered herself onto the cold flagstones beside him and did not wake him at once. In the margin of the almanac someone long dead had written in faded brown ink: i spent my life folded between the pages of books. Maud had read that line a hundred times in a hundred bindings and had never thought to wonder who had written it, or why they had needed to say it at all.

When the boy finally stirred, she did not scold him. She pressed a brass key into his palm, the one that had hung unused on her belt for twenty years, and told him the king would never think to search a book for anything. "Take the almanac," she said. "Bring it back when you've finished the sixty-second chapter. Nobody's read that one since the flood."

He looked up at the tall shelves, then down at the page, and Maud saw the exact moment he decided the dark no longer frightened him. "Mind the seventh step," she added, climbing to her feet with a groan. "It creaks, and the books hate being woken."
