Three small stars on the inner wrist
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A raised hand shows three small, solid black star shapes arranged in a loose triangle on the inner wrist. The stars are simple, filled and widely spaced, with clean edges against the pale skin. The background includes a wooden surface, a knitted pale green blanket and an open book with printed text, which makes the wrist tattoo the small focal point.

The ewe had been labouring since the light went, and by eleven my father had given up on the lamp and was kneeling in the straw with his sleeves rolled to the elbow, saying nothing. I held the torch. Outside, the frost had come down so hard that the yard gate rang when the wind touched it, and the sky above the top field was clear enough to cut your hand on.

My grandmother used to say that three stars sitting close together over the Hallam ridge meant a lamb would come right. When I was small I believed her, mostly because she said it while pouring tea so hot it steamed the window. I looked up through the cowshed door while Dad worked. There they were, low and a little apart, exactly as she had drawn them for me on the back of a feed receipt: one, then two, then a third set off to the side like someone who had stopped to wait.
The lamb came feet first, then stuck, then slid out all at once onto the straw in a rush of steam. It did not move. Dad rubbed it with a handful of hay until it coughed, and then it bawled, and the ewe lifted her head and made the low sound that means yes, I know, I am here.
We stayed until the stars had turned past the barn roof. In the morning I found the old receipt in the dresser drawer and wrote the date under her handwriting, and beside it I drew three small marks in biro, spaced the way the stars had been.
