Ivy Marsh had been told three times that the library was closing, and she had not yet finished the chapter about the lighthouse keeper's cat. Her father stood in the doorway of the reading room jingling his keys like a man who meant it. She pretended not to hear and read on, one finger tracing the lines as though they might rearrange themselves into a map.

Her grandfather had been a merchant seaman before the war. He taught her that three stars held in a triangle were a fix, a way of knowing where you were once the land had let go of you. He drew them on the inside of her wrist with a pen from the shop counter, and when the ink faded she asked him to do it again, and again, until the blue turned grey and he stopped answering when she asked.

The lamps went out at a quarter past nine. Ivy slipped out by the back stairs with the book pressed under her cardigan and climbed onto the flat roof above the coal store, where the town ended in fields and the sky opened like a dropped shawl. Three stars sat low over the water tower. She lined them up with her thumb, the way he had shown her, and felt the ground settle under her feet.

Below, her father's torch swung along the gravel path, searching. She did not call out. She drew a line from the first star to the second with her fingernail on the cold tar, and when the torch finally found her she could point up and say exactly where she was.
