Three triangle framed rose designs on tracing paper
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
Three triangular tattoo designs are drawn on translucent paper, each centred on a rose seen from different angles. The top left design uses fine outlines with stippled dots and leaves, the right design has soft pencil shading with a few leaves at the edges, and the bottom design is filled with mandala-style patterns, scallops and dots around the rose. The sheets rest on a wooden surface, and all the artwork is in black and grey.

Her name was Nell Orrell and she worked the back room above the hall in Leeds, where they drew up the designs for the plasterwork. Three sheets a week, tracing paper gone yellow at the edges, and never a line wasted.

One Thursday the manager wanted a rose for the ceiling boss, and he wanted it set in a triangle, because the new ballroom had three doors and he was a man who liked a shape to hold things. Nell took her pencil and drew the rose from above first, then from the side where the petals fold back like a skirt, then from low down where you can see the dark heart of it. Three roses. She said a rose tells you one truth from each angle and you need all three before anyone will believe you.
The manager looked at them a long while, then he went down to dance with his wife, and Nell stayed on, rolling the sheets gently so the pencil wouldn't smudge. Years later the plaster came down and the boss went with it, but the sheets survived in a biscuit tin under the stairs, and that's the only reason I can tell you about them tonight. Now, who owes me a waltz?
