A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The box came up from London on the Tuesday train, wrapped in brown paper and smelling of someone else's cigarettes, and Mam wouldn't let me open it until the kettle had boiled. Inside was a small grey box with a lid that lifted like a drawer, and under the tissue lay a card printed with Please return to in curling script, above Dunmore & Pyle, New York, and beneath that the figures 925. Nobody in Cwm Ithel had ever been to New York. Dad said the name was a story told to make silver sound further off than it was.

Dad spent thirty-one years underground at the Gwen level, bringing up lead and the odd thread of silver that the company weighed and sent away. He knew what 925 meant better than any London man. Nine parts silver in every ten parts of something cheaper, he'd say, tapping the bench with a grimy finger. A thing was only as good as the nines it kept.

The ring inside had been his mother's. He had pawned it in March to cover the coal, and I had paid the man in Merthyr to get it back, then posted it up to London to be cleaned because the shop there promised to make it bright again. It came home bright. Dad turned it over in the lamplight for a long time and didn't put it on. He held it out to me instead and asked for a pencil.

He wrote beneath the printed line, in his square pit-prop capitals: 4 PIT ROW, CWM ITHEL. The card still says New York at the top, but the pencil is what the postman reads.
