Tiger eyes and feathers on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A close, realistic tiger face covers the forearm, with striking bright blue eyes at the centre and striped fur shaded in black and grey. Soft feathers drift across the top edge of the design, adding depth and a light, wispy contrast. The skin is photographed against a window with horizontal blinds, which sit blurred behind the arm.

The crate came aboard at Gravesend with air holes punched through its lid and a sack of wet straw nailed to one side, and Nell Harrow, who had cooked for the Marigold for nineteen years, was told by the purser to keep her hands off it. She kept them off for four days. On the fifth, the galley cat came down the companionway with its tail fluffed to twice its size and refused to go near the stove, and Nell understood that something was living in the hold that did not care for her pans.

She began leaving the mutton scraps on the ledge outside the hatch, the ones the crew would never eat anyway, and each morning they were gone and a few grey feathers lay in their place, soft as ash from a dead fire. The mate plucked gulls for the officers' table and swore he had never seen a gull moult like that. One night she lifted the hatch an inch with a bread knife in her other hand and saw two eyes come up out of the dark, bright blue as the flame under a kettle, and then the rest of a face, striped and heavy-jawed, looking at her as though she were the one behind bars.
In Calcutta the agent came aboard with a bill of sale and a boy carrying coiled rope. Nell stood at the rail with a bowl of scraps and told him the animal had not eaten properly since the Cape. It was a lie, and the captain knew it, but the sale was put off a day while the agent counted his money twice. That night she went below with a lamp, eased the bolts back, and sat on an upturned bucket until the tiger stepped out and rested its chin on her knee, warm and heavy as bread dough. She never told anyone what she did next, only that at dawn the rail was wet with spray, and a trail of grey feathers drifted off the lee side and out across the brown water like something being let go.
