Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A forward-facing tiger head is rendered with detailed shading, dense stripes and whiskers in black ink. The tide had turned twice before anyone thought to look for the tiger on the sea wall. Old Maren Haskett swore it had come down from the hills in the night, pale-eyed and heavy with rain, and that it had sat facing the harbour until the lamps went out in the fish houses. Nobody believed her until the boats were already at the mouth of the bay, and then nobody could say they hadn't.

The fleet had gone out with eleven boats and a rule that no one would whistle on the water. The skipper, Tobias Crane, kept a brass compass in his coat, and the men said it pointed where the tiger was looking. He had bought it from a travelling pedlar who wanted nothing for it but a promise to bring the boats home before the spring tide. Crane laughed at that and took the compass anyway, because the men were watching and laughing was cheaper than arguing.
On the fourth morning the fog lifted and the water lay flat as a slate. The compass needle swung hard to the east, toward a bank of rock nobody had marked on any chart. The boats followed it in a line, one behind another, and when the keel of the first boat grated on stone, the men climbed out and found the tiger carved into the rock, circled by rings of grooves that filled with water as the tide rose. Its eyes were the only dry places left.
Crane knelt and pressed his palm to one eye. The compass stopped spinning and pointed straight back to the harbour. They sailed home that evening with full nets and no words, and every boat that followed the tiger's gaze after that came home too.
