Tiger head tattoo on a finger
Realism · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A tiger's head is tattooed across one finger of a hand resting on a wooden surface. The fur and face are shaded in soft greys with fine detail in the eyes, whiskers and stripes. The photograph is greyscale, and the hand fills most of the frame with the tattoo at the centre.

The cook of the coaster Mary Ansel kept a biscuit tin under his stove, and every night he fed what was in it. Nobody aboard knew what lived there, only that it ate salt beef off the end of a fork and never made a sound. His grandmother had told him that an animal you feed is an animal that will not eat you, so he asked no questions and scraped the pan clean each night.

In the spring the ship put in at Bombay, and when she sailed the tin was empty and a striped head lay on the coal sacks, grey as the smoke in the galley. The captain wanted it over the side. The mate wanted it shot. The cook only said it had been fed and would take its own road, and he went back to his pots. Off Finisterre a wave came over the rail that would have taken the boy on the foredeck, and the thing that had been a tiger stood up in the spray and was between them before anyone saw it move.
They made Hull in October with the boy alive and the captain sober and nobody speaking of the tin. The cook went down the gangplank with his kit bag and found the animal already on the quay, sitting as calm as a dog outside a chapel. It looked at him once, the way a customer looks at the change, and walked off into the fog between the warehouses.
That night a brass ring turned up on the cook's table, still warm from the stove. A tiger's head was worked into its face, and along one side ran a single black stripe of soot that wiped off on his thumb and came back the next morning.
