The last zoo on Ceres was sold for scrap the year the greenhouses went dark, but Oona still carried its ledger in her coat. Pressed between the pages was a sketch of the lioness who had once paced the glass enclosure, and beside it, in Tam's cramped hand, a note: hunt in pairs, never lead alone. He had tapped the design onto her finger with a sterilised pin the night before the drop ship left, and she had let him, because the air in the bunk room smelled of ink and burnt sugar and neither of them wanted to be the first to stop.

Four years on, the salvage yards at Kepler Reach paid in water credits, and Oona was owed three hundred of them by a dealer named Halloran, who kept his bonded crates behind a sealed hatch. She went to collect with the ledger open on her palm. Halloran laughed at the drawing, then at the sum, and stopped laughing when she laid her hand flat on his counter so the lion on her finger caught the lamp. 'My brother says lionesses don't bargain,' she told him. 'They wait until the herd is in the open.'
The hatch sealed behind her with a shriek that threw her against the rail, and the lights in the cargo deck died one by one. Tam was on the far side of the bulkhead, pounding a code she could not see. She found the emergency vent by touch, pulled herself into the shaft, and felt for the next rung with her left hand, then her right. When her knuckles met his fingers through the grille, the two small heads pressed together in the dark, and the recycler fans shuddered into life above them. Somewhere below, the water began to run again, and neither of them let go first.
