Lion head tattoos on two fingers
Realism · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are clasped together, with a lion head tattooed on the middle finger of each hand. The left lion has a full, shaded mane and the right shows a smaller head with a lighter face. The linework and shading are soft and detailed, and the tattoos are shown in close focus against the skin.

He took it to his sister Nell, who kept the chandlery and had a steady hand with brass. She said the lion had a twin somewhere, because the grain ran the same way on both sides, as if one block had been split down the middle and sent off in different directions. They spent a wet week asking at every boat that came in. The answer came from a trawler called the Marigold, whose skipper kept a second carved lion nailed above his bunk, lighter in the face, with one ear chipped.
When the two were set side by side on Nell's counter, the maned one seemed to turn its gaze towards the other, and the grain lined up like a seam. Corrie called it foolishness. Nell said she had watched the sea return a great many things in forty years, and it had never once returned a thing it did not mean to.
They fixed the lions to a length of cord and carried them out on the next morning's haul, one in each pocket, and the cold never got past the knuckle again.
