Sugar skull tattoos on two fingers
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two fingers carry sugar skull designs, one with a skull above a filigree pattern of scrolls and dots, the other with a skull framed by floral shapes. The shading uses fine stippling and soft grey tones to give the skulls depth, with bold outlines and detailed ornamentation. The image is in warm, low-key lighting against a dark background, and a silver ring sits on an adjacent finger.

Dear Inés,

The marigolds came up along the lane again, orange as cheap sweets, despite the frost that took the beans. Mr Halloran says it is the ground remembering something. I told him the ground has never remembered a thing in its life, and he laughed and said that was exactly what a ground would say. You always said the sugar needed more water than the recipe claimed, and you were right, though I have not yet told you so.
I found your moulds under the stairs, still wrapped in the Gazette from the spring you left. The tin one with the crooked eye sockets was the first I tried. I pressed the paste in, tapped it out onto greaseproof paper, and sat by the window with the piping bag while it set. The scrollwork is the hard part. Each curl wants to be the same width as the last, and each dot has to sit where a tear would fall, which is the point of it, you told me: not to be sad, but to remember properly.
When the first batch had dried I carried one down the lane to the edge of the wood, where the pines give way to birch, and set it on the old stump by the gate. I did not expect anything. This morning the stump was bare except for three marigold petals, and a line of small prints going back toward the trees. I am not writing to say the forest took it. I am writing to say I made another, and this one is for you. Come and collect it whenever the trains stop being so stubborn.
