Tiger sleeve and rose on the hand
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A forearm and hand are shown with a realistic tiger head tattooed on the forearm, with its eye and striped fur detailed in fine shading. The tattoo continues down onto the back of the hand, where a large rose is rendered with soft gradients and highlights. The work is entirely in black ink and grey tones against a dark top and denim shorts, with a blurred indoor background.

The ivy had taken the east tower by the time the tiger came down the scree, and I stood in the gatehouse arch with the lantern guttering, watching it pick its way over the broken masonry as if it owned the place, which I suppose it did. Lord Ashcombe had kept it in an iron cage behind the old kitchens for eleven years. Nobody had told me a beast like that could go quiet when it was fed.

The steward left me the keys and a list of instructions in a looping hand: feed at dusk, never turn your back, do not enter the rose garden after the bell. I learned about the garden on the third night. The roses were planted by the first countess, and they grew through the cracked flagstones the way bad news travels, fat and dark and far too many petals. The tiger liked to lie among them. Its striped flank would dissolve into the shadows until only its eyes showed, two grey coins catching my light.
On the fourth night the bell did not ring, and I went into the garden anyway, because the gate stood open and the tiger was nowhere I could see. A rose had climbed up through the bars of its empty cage, a bloom the size of a fist, and beneath its petals lay a ring of fine silver wire I did not remember. The tiger stood at my shoulder, close enough that I felt the heat of it, and it did not growl.
I understood then what the steward had been afraid of. Ashcombe had never been keeping the beast in. He had been keeping the garden out, and the countess had struck her bargain with the roses long before any of us arrived. I held out my hand, palm up. The thorns were already waiting, and the tiger lowered its great striped head and breathed against my knuckles, slow and patient, as if it had been expecting me all along.
