Tiny number 11 on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A hand holds a white teacup and saucer with a tea bag labelled YOUR TEA, and a line drawing of a seated woman is printed inside the cup. Near the bottom of the frame, a small black tattoo of the numerals 11 sits on the wrist, drawn in thin, simple linework. The palette is black ink against white ceramic, amber tea and a dark background.

At the Kessel pass, where the road crosses the stream and the stream is the border, old Ilse kept a stall under a tin roof with a kettle that never went cold. The guards on both banks drank from her cups and never once agreed on which country the water belonged to.

One November a woman came down the eastern path with no papers, only a grey bundle over one shoulder and a face that was hard to hold in the eye for long. She asked Ilse for tea. Ilse poured it, and before she could set the pot down the woman climbed into the cup herself, folding her knees to her chin, small as a moth in a jar. Ilse did not scream. She had seen stranger things steeped in that kettle, and she had learned that a guest who asks for tea has paid already.
The guards came at dusk with lamps. They counted the travellers as they always did, touching each shoulder, and they counted eleven at the bridge rail though only ten had crossed that day. Ilse lifted the cup and said, "Eleven steps to the far bank, and the tea is paid for." The senior guard looked into the amber and saw nothing but a tag turning slowly on its string, the words YOUR TEA printed plain across it.
They walked. On the eleventh step the stream went quiet, and the woman was simply standing on the far side, dripping and unstamped and free. Ilse rinsed the cup, dried it on her apron, and kept the tag in her pocket for many winters afterwards.
