Tiny outlined shape on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A very small tattoo of a simple outlined shape sits on the forearm, with the linework drawn in thin black strokes and little or no shading. The photograph is black and white and shows a person in a white t-shirt lying on rumpled white sheets, with only the lower face and the arm in view. The tattoo is a small, centred detail against the pale fabric, which makes its outline easy to see.

The ferry timetable was the only paper left in the house that nobody needed, so Nell Harrow folded it into a boat on the morning her brother's letter failed to come. She made the hull narrow and the bow sharp, the way her father had shown her on the slipway, and she pressed each crease with her thumbnail until the edges sang.

Her brother had gone south with the herring boats in March and promised a letter by Lammas. Everyone in Cullen Bay knew the post came over the hill in a grey van that never kept to time, and most of them had stopped waiting for it. Nell carried the boat down to the harbour wall at low water and set it on the green slick where the tide turned.
It did not sink. It drifted out past the moored dinghies and the rusted buoy, turning slowly as if it meant to look back at her, until the glare off the water swallowed it. She went home to find the kettle still warm from her mother's hand.
The letter was on the mat, its envelope already soft with salt. On the back, in her brother's cramped hand, was a small folded boat with a sail, and beneath it three words: Keep the course.
