Forearm tattoo beside white ripped jeans
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A person lies on white bedding wearing ripped white jeans and a chunky white knit jumper, with one hand resting on the hip. A dark tattoo is visible on the forearm near the wrist, partly covered by bracelets, so its design and linework cannot be made out clearly. The palette is white and pale blue with the ink appearing dark against the skin.

The bleach got into the cracks of Nell's knuckles every Monday, and by Wednesday the sting had settled into something she stopped noticing. What she could not stop noticing was the blue. Indigo lived under her nails and in the fine lines of her wrist, a stain from the vat room she had worked in at sixteen, and no amount of scrubbing lifted it. Her mother called it a badge. Nell called it a nuisance and wore her brother's steel bangles from Sheffield to keep it out of sight.

The order came from a hotel outside Harrogate: four hundred sheets, white as a surgeon's gown, bleached three times and folded in tissue. Mr Haworth ran the works from a glass box above the vats and counted every bolt himself, tapping the paper with a pencil as though the numbers might change if he looked away. He had no patience for stains, and he had never once asked where Nell's came from.
On the last night before delivery the boiler gave out, and the wet cloth sat sour in the drying loft. Nell climbed up with a torch to rescue it and found, hanging at the far end, a single sheet with a print pressed into the weave. It was a hand, small and splayed, the blue faded to the colour of a bruise. She knew it at once. She had made it years ago, leaning on a wet bolt to steady herself, and had been scolded for it and forgotten it. She should have torn it down. Instead she stood there until the torch dimmed, then left it hanging.
The sheets went out on Thursday, counted, signed for, and never returned. Weeks later a chambermaid in Harrogate, shaking out a stack from the linen cupboard, found one with a faint blue hand in the middle of the fold. She held it up to the window for a moment, then smoothed it flat and put it back where the guests would never see.
