The two stick figures had lived on the ninth floor of Halden House since the lift was broken in the spring, and every evening they climbed the stairs hand in hand because neither would let go. Nobody on the estate knew where they had come from. Mrs Okafor said they were chalk on a wall once, rubbed out by a council man who had meant to paint the whole stairwell, and that they had simply walked off the render and started counting the floors.

The stairwell lights went out at nine, so they carried a matchbox of spent matches and struck one at each landing to see the numbers. By the fourth floor they had stopped talking, because talking used up the match faster. On the sixth landing the smaller one stopped to look at a red plastic bag caught in the railings, and the taller one waited, as it always did, without letting go.

They reached the ninth floor just as the last match burned down to the wood. Behind the door of flat 9C a kettle was boiling for a man who had worked nights for thirty years and would never know that two small figures had carried his supper up the stairs in the dark. The figures pressed their heads together against the cold metal of the door, and then, very slowly, they began the climb back down.
