To Infinity and Beyond script across two feet
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
Two bare feet show black handwritten script tattoos, with To Infinity across the top of the left foot and And Beyond across the top of the right foot. The lettering is inked in a uniform dark tone with slightly uneven strokes and soft edges, and the words read as a pair across both feet. The toenails are painted in purple and teal against a grey textured carpet, and the framing is close and straight-on.

Nobody in Harrow Fell had ever seen a glider built from a wardrobe door, so when Kit Maddox dragged one up the lane on a wet Saturday, half the cottages came out to watch. He was twelve and wouldn't say why he'd done it. His sister Bea, nine and bossy, trudged behind him with a tin of black enamel and a brush gone stiff as a cat's whisker, and she was the one who insisted the wings should say something.

They argued the whole way up the hill. Kit wanted the words to be his. Bea said a proper glider needed a proper motto, the kind the pilots used in the pictures their gran kept in a biscuit tin. In the end she painted To Infinity along one wing in careful capitals, and he wrote And Beyond along the other, his letters leaning like fence posts in a gale. The wind off the Nab took them at a quarter past four. The door sailed out over the bottom field, wobbled, and dropped into a bank of bracken, where a farmer's collie barked at it for the rest of the afternoon.
Kit came down the hill with a split lip and no glider. Bea found him sitting in the nettles, glaring at the sky as if it owed him money. She didn't say anything clever. She took the enamel tin from his coat pocket, found the brush still tacky, and wrote the words again on the flat stone by the gate, with the same wobble in the letters. Now it wasn't just a wing, she said, it was a rule. The stone is still there, and the rain has been at it for years, but you can still read it from the lane.
