A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Pennock kept the boarding house on Gull Row for forty years and never once let a guest leave without a pot of her gorse-flower jam. The summer the ferry stopped running, she gave Tobias the attic room and Clemmie the one above the kitchen, and by the second week the pair of them had fallen into the habit of arguing across the breakfast table about the tides, which neither of them could read properly.

It was Clemmie who drew the trident. She had sketched it on the back of a ferry timetable with a borrowed pen, a three-pronged fork for the sea god who had once, her grandmother said, owed the village a boat. Tobias laughed and said the god had been paid in full already, and then, without asking, he took the pen and drew a heart on her wrist, looping a scroll of waves around it so it would not wander off. She told him that was not how hearts worked. He said the sea did not care how hearts worked.

They did not mean it as a promise, not then. But in October the ferry started again, and Tobias had to cross to the mainland for the winter refit. Clemmie walked him to the slipway and found the old pen in her coat pocket, and drew the trident on his palm where the waves would wash it off by dusk. When the boat was a grey smudge past the breakwater, she looked down and saw the tide had already come up over the stones, lifting the wet weed and the drawn line both, and she went back up Gull Row to put the kettle on.
