Small heart and key tattoos on fingers
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are held close together, with a small outlined heart tattoo on the side of one finger and a tiny key tattoo on a finger of the other hand. Both designs are drawn in thin black linework with no shading, and the ink is the only colour against the warm, faded tones of the skin. The close framing keeps the two small tattoos as the clear focus of the composition.

The brass blank would not take the cut. Ada Mensah had filed it twice and set it back in the vice, and now the shop was going blue at the window, the market gates shutting one by one across the square. The commission sat on the bench beside her: a tin box no bigger than a bread roll, its lid dented, a small heart pressed into the top. Mr Halloran had brought it in that morning without much talk and left a sketch of the key he remembered, its bow curled like a fern frond.

She knew the sketch was wrong before she knew why. The bit was too deep and the shoulder too square. He had told her the box had never been locked in forty years, that the key had simply gone astray somewhere between a dresser drawer and a house move, and that he wanted it found before he could decide what to do with the box. Ada had nodded and said nothing, because people who wanted a key cut for a box they had never locked usually had reasons they preferred to keep in their pockets.
Turning the blank under the lamp, she noticed a scratch inside the bow, made with a pin by a younger, less steady hand. Two initials and a heart no bigger than a grain of rice. Not his wife's initials, she thought, or not only hers. She laughed out loud in the empty shop and filed the bit to match the scratch, not the sketch.
At half five Halloran came back for it. She turned the key in the lock and it gave a clean click, the lid lifting on a smell of old paper and lavender. He stood a long time looking into the box, then asked her to cut a second copy, identical, which she did without charging him. He pressed the new key into her palm, warm from his coat, and said the first one had been cut the spring they married, and that the box had only ever held letters he had written her before they were wed.
