Script lettering on both feet
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
Two bare feet are shown from the front, each with a line of thin grey script wrapping around the outer side of the foot, with a small looped ornament and a dotted trail near the toes. The linework is fine and even, and the ink is solid black-grey with soft fading where the skin curves. The feet fill most of the frame against a dark car surface and green hedge, with the toenails painted dark red.

Dear Ruth,

The ferry didn't come on Tuesday, nor on Wednesday, so I am writing this on the back of the chart table with the lamp turned low to save the paraffin. Your brother has stopped asking when the boat will be fixed. He sits on the step with his boots off and counts the gulls, which is more than either of us can manage.
I found your mother's sewing box under the bunk this morning. Wrapped in a scrap of oilcloth was the spool of grey thread she used for hemming the canvas bags, the same thread she tied round the handle of the bread knife so nobody would mistake it for their own. I have been turning it over all afternoon. Her hand ran in loops when she wrote the tide tables, and there were little dots of ink where she stopped to think, as if a sentence could wait for her to decide it.
I will say the thing plainly, since the wind has got into my pen and makes it wander. Whatever the sea does to this island, I will not go down to the slipway without telling you first, and I will not leave the north rocks without a line tied to my wrist. Tell the harbour master I said so. He will laugh, and then he will do it.
The lamp is nearly dry and the thread is in my pocket. When the boat comes, I will walk you to the quay myself and you will not need to read another word of mine.
Yours, and not going anywhere, Agnes
