You will say I am being sentimental, and you will be right, but I am writing this at the kitchen table at half two because the last bus has gone and the streetlamps outside the flats have turned that particular orange that makes everything look like an old photograph. Mum says you have been sleeping on the floor of the depot office since Tuesday. Is that true?

I went to Yusuf's place on Corporation Street after my shift, the one above the launderette with the sign that buzzes. He had the two words traced onto greaseproof paper before I got there. Together on one side, Forever on the other. I told him it was too much for a Thursday, and he said nothing is too much for a Thursday if you are doing it with someone who has already decided.

Here is the thing I keep turning over. We argued for twenty minutes about which word went where, because Forever is the longer word and it wanted the wider stretch of skin. In the end it was Dani who said that a word meant to last should sit where it gets handled most, so it wears in rather than wearing out. I thought that was clever until I saw it finished, and then I thought it was simply true.
