King and Queen script with crowns on hands
Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
The photo shows two hands pressed together, with the word King in looping script and a small crown on one hand and the word Queen in script with a crown above it on the other. The linework is bold and even, with some shading around the letters. The image is greyscale, and the tattoos sit against natural skin tones with a plain light background.

The fair pulled up at Wellow Green the week the harvest came in, and by the Thursday Tobin had lost his whole week's wages to Ada Rook at the hook-a-duck. She had won them honestly, she said, because she never once looked down at her own hands when she was counting.

Her mother ran the coconut shy and kept a tin box under the counter with a crown scratched into its lid. Inside were two paper crowns folded from a newspaper, a brass button, and a letter neither of them could read. Ada said the tin belonged to whoever could sit the wooden horse of the carousel without the brass pole moving.
Tobin tried it at dusk. The pole shuddered, the horse creaked, and he slid off with his palm grazed raw on the rail. Ada laughed, pressed her hand flat against his, and told him that was how kings got made in this country: you pressed your hand to someone else's and held on until the other let go.
They held on past the lamps being lit, past the moths thick in the air, past her mother calling them in for supper. Neither let go. At last the fair man came round with the generator switched off and found them still joined in the dark, palm to palm, and he took the tin from under the counter and gave it to them without a word.
