Torch with flame and eye design
Traditional · Black and grey · Flash
A torch with a tall, swirling flame rises above a round holder decorated with a single open eye and a row of scalloped arcs. The shaft tapers down to a ring at the base, with bands and fluted lines that give it a classic feel. The linework is bold and black, with grey shading and fine stippled texture across the flame and background, set centred on a plain white ground.

The lamp on the Mary Ellen had gone out twice since Gravesend, and each time Tobias Reeve had climbed the cabin ladder with his tinderbox and cursed the damp that crept up from the Thames. Tonight the fog lay so thick on the water that the barge's bow seemed to nose into a wall of wet wool. Ruth stood at the tiller with her collar turned up, her eyes fixed on the single brass eye bolted above the stern rail, the one her father had fitted years before to watch for lights ahead.

"Light it properly this time," she said. "The Lower Hope buoy isn't going to move out of our way for you."
He did it properly. He fed the wick with a little paraffin, struck the flint twice, and held the flame steady inside the glass until it stood up tall and blue, twisting like a thing that wanted to be somewhere else. Ruth glanced up at it and nodded, the way she nodded at a sound engine or a well-tied knot. Below them the water sucked at the hull, and somewhere to larboard a bell clanged, far off and patient.
They made the buoy by the grace of that flame, and not much else. When the fog thinned at dawn, Tobias saw that the lamp had burned down to a single steady point, and that Ruth had already tucked the eye's cover back over the rail, as if she had never needed to watch for anything at all. He said nothing about it. Some things on a river are best left to keep their own light.
