Torn map and compass rose on shoulder blade
Realism · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A torn-paper map design spreads across the shoulder and upper back, with ragged edges that appear to reveal a large compass rose at the centre. Fine shading gives the paper a lifted, three-dimensional look, and thin hairline cracks run across the surface. The work is entirely black and grey, with the compass rose drawn in darker, bolder tones against the lighter map areas.

The king's clerk arrives at the chart-house of Ostrevane before the bells, and it is you he sends down to the cabinet for the great sea chart. You unroll it across the long table and see that the western provinces have been painted over in the new pale ink, the coast of Carrowdell sanded away as though it had never broken the water. Your master, old Pell, who has inked every harbour in the realm for forty years, says nothing. He only holds the lamp closer to the sheet.

The order is that the chart must be surrendered to the Crown by noon, redrawn with the dukes' borders and no sea beyond the Fleur Reach. Pell asks you to fetch the lettering knife. He tells you to cut the compass rose from the margin, the brass-bright star he drew when he was a boy and still the only true thing in the room. You work it free slowly, and while the clerk's back is turned to the window you tear the parchment along its old folds. You do not tear it cleanly. Each ragged edge shows the blue beneath, and the lines of the coast run off into the cracks like rivers finding their way out.
The clerk takes the new sheets that afternoon, and the realm learns its shape from them for a long time. Years later a fisherman from the western coast comes to your counter with a torn corner pinned inside his coat. He asks whether you can mend it so the coves come back in their right places.
You cannot mend it. You take the scrap, turn the compass rose until its north faces the wall where the old tide tables hang, and set it flat in his palm. "Here," you tell him, "is where you are."
