Torn skin revealing a compass and old map
Realism · Shoulder · Mixed · Photo
A tattoo across the shoulder blade and upper back appears to show skin torn open to reveal an aged parchment map beneath. The map has sepia and orange tones, with partial lettering, and a blue ship's wheel compass rose sits at the centre with a blue fleur-de-lis and blue lines running across the torn edges. The shading gives the tears a raised, three-dimensional look, and the image is shot straight on with the shoulder on the left.

The wind came over the Cardo pass the way it always did, flat and sideways, and you held the map against your chest with both arms because the paper kept trying to leave you. Tomas had told you at the hut that the sheet was older than the road. Its ink had gone the colour of weak tea, and along the top someone had written CARTA in a hand that pressed too hard into the vellum.

You reached the shepherd's shelter as the light went. Tomas lit the stove without speaking and laid your compass on the table beside the cup. The brass rose was painted blue around its points, and the needle trembled, then settled north-east, away from the track the map insisted on. The fleur-de-lis beside the pass meant the path was safe in spring. It was no longer spring. The wind had torn a corner of the sheet loose in the night, and beneath it lay a second, paler route, drawn in a different ink, running along a gully the first map had left blank.
You followed the pale line at dawn with the compass open in your palm. The needle held steady where the old map lied, and by mid-morning the gully opened onto a cairn with a fresh scratch of arrows on its face. Tomas was already there, sitting on a flat stone, smoking. He took the torn sheet from you, looked at the hidden route for a long time, and said his grandfather had drawn the false path on purpose, to keep smugglers and sheep thieves off the true one. He folded the map along its old creases and handed it back. You kept the pale sheet and let the wind have the rest.
