Realistic colour tattoo across a back and shoulder, showing torn skin that reveals an old orange map beneath, with a blue compass rose at the centre.

Torn skin revealing a compass and old map

Realism · Shoulder · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a ripped, peeling skin effect across the shoulder blade and upper back, revealing an aged parchment map beneath with faint lettering and coastlines. A blue compass rose sits at the centre, with a fleur-de-lis and blue compass lines extending across the torn edges. The shading gives the skin a raised, three-dimensional look, with soft colour gradients in orange, yellow and pale tones.

Dear Ada,

The sea got into the chart room again on Thursday, and Captain Vosper has been walking the deck since like a man who has lost a tooth. The map is the old Spanish one he bought in Bristol, the paper gone soft as bread crust at the edges, the Caribbean printed across it in faded ochre. When the swell came over the rail the whole northern corner lifted off its board, and I was the one sent down with the lamp to fetch it up before the water took the rest.

He wanted it dried by the galley range, flat on the rack above the coal, so I have spent three nights with it. The paper curls like a dry leaf whenever the heat touches it, and the blue of the compass rose has bled outward into the cracks, so that the rose looks as if it is coming through the sea rather than lying on top of it. Someone long dead ruled the little lines that run from its points across the coast of Saint-Domingue, and every one of them still meets at the same place. I keep finding my eye drawn to it while I peel the potatoes.

The captain asked me this morning whether I had seen his pencil marks along the Windward Passage. I said I had not. That was a lie, and I expect he knows it. There is a faint line in the margin that someone drew over and then rubbed out, and I have been tracing it with my thumb the way you once traced the scar on my wrist.

I have pinned the torn corner above the stove, compass side to the wall, so it faces the bulkhead where the ship's bell hangs. When the galley swings in the night I hear it knock against the wood. I have not told the captain, but I think the map is glad to be somewhere warm.

Tell Father the mackerel was good this week. I will write again from the next port.

Your loving brother, Tom
