Toucan perched on an upper arm
Blackwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A toucan perches on a branch, shown in profile with its large beak turned towards the top of the arm. The feathers use solid black fills, fine hatched lines and stippled dots, while the beak and eye are rendered with clean contrast. The image is in black and grey, framed by a white sleeve and a bottle held in the other hand at the lower right.

You are holding the ring box at the back of the marquee because Tom gave up on his pockets an hour ago and handed you the job with the look of a man passing on a live wire. Through a gap in the canvas you can see the lawn, the string lights not yet switched on, and the cake table, where somebody has propped the grandmother's toucan on a sugar branch. Nobody asked for it. Ines said the bird had watched from her nan's mantelpiece in Porto for fifty years, through every row and every birthday, and it would be rude to leave it behind.

The toucan is heavier than it looks. Its beak has a chip near the tip that someone has tried to hide with a dab of brown paint, and when you lift the branch you find a folded card tucked behind the feathers. It is a list of things her nan said a marriage needed, written in faded blue biro. Item one is struck through. Item two says you should always be the one who goes back for the good bread. You read the card twice, then fold it along its old creases and tuck it back exactly where you found it.
Tom appears at the flap with his tie undone and his hand out. You give him the box, and he asks what you were doing with the bird. You tell him you were checking it still had its nerve. He laughs, then goes quiet, and the two of you stand there while the band tunes up on the far side of the lawn.
When you look back through the gap, the toucan is facing the dance floor, its big beak angled towards the crowd as though it has been waiting all evening for the first song.
