Kitchen knife on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A realistic kitchen knife with a dark handle and three rivets, its blade shaded in grey tones with a worn, streaked finish. The knife is drawn so that it appears to sit within the skin, with shadowed edges suggesting depth. The forearm is shown against a black backdrop with the hand open, and a green sleeve is pushed up on the left.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The knife had belonged to Mother Hesketh for forty years, and by the time her daughter Ellen was promised to the miller's son, its handle was worn pale where three rivets held it to the wood. Nobody in Thornby would cut bread with anything else once the bargain was made, though nobody could say who had made it first.

Old Hesketh had told the story once, over her husband's wake, as plainly as she told everything. A blade kept in a house will cut what the house needs and nothing it does not. Ellen laughed at her. On the morning of the wedding she carried the loaf to the long table herself, and the knife went through the crust like wet cloth, leaving every slice the same thickness.

Then Dunstan Reed, who had sold the family short weight of flour for a decade, reached across for the loaf with his own blade. His knife would not bite. It skated over the crust and turned in his hand like a fish, and when Ellen finally lifted the loaf away, the crumb beneath was whole and warm. Dunstan went red to the ears and passed the bread down the table without a word.

That evening Ellen hung the knife back on its nail above the hearth, where it had always hung. Tom asked her what the old woman had meant about what the house needed. She set the loaf on the board, cut him a slice of even thickness, and said that was all of it.
