Lipstick, brush and roses on a forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a red lipstick tube with a gold case and a makeup brush with a red-tipped bristle head, crossed over a red rose and dark green leaves. Bold black outlines and solid fills with flat shading define the forms, with a few laid-in highlights on the lipstick and case. Bright reds and greens dominate on a light background of skin, and the design is framed closely around the forearm.

Nobody had mixed that pigment since the seed vaults sealed. I had the tin because I was the only one left who could tell a true red from a rust red by smell.

Hob Tarrant came to me in the fourth cycle with a brush he had made from the bristles of a cleaning drone. He wanted to paint the rose that grew on the galley wall, the one that bloomed without light from the algae tanks. I told him roses were a waste of nutrient. He told me that was exactly why.

We worked nights by the cold-lamp, grinding the carmine with oil scraped from the turbine seals. The case we pressed from a gold-plated docking clamp, and I scratched the sprig of leaves into it with a sewing needle, the way my grandmother had shown me on an old biscuit tin. When the stick finally turned, the colour was nearly exact. Hob held it up to the viewport and said the stars looked bored by comparison.

The turn came at the station's last inspection, when the inspector asked what the lipstick was for. Hob looked at the rose, then at me, and said, 'For whoever's still here to notice.' She logged it as cargo and let us keep it. We still have the tin. Nobody has opened it since, and the red keeps.
