Traditional eagle on chest
Traditional · Chest · Mixed · Photo
A bold eagle swoops diagonally across the chest, with its wings spread and talons extended toward the lower right. Heavy black outlines define the feathers, which are shaded in black and grey with scalloped detailing on the wing coverts. Yellow beak and talons, red flashes behind the body and teal-blue tones on the head and wing create a saturated colour palette.

The gulls had given up on the slipway by the time you tied the skiff to the iron ring, which was the first sign the eagle had come back. Nobody on Sgeir Mhòr called it a sea eagle to your face. They said the Old Bird, and they said it the way you'd mention a debt. Mrs Grieve at the shop told you her father saw it take a lamb off the machair in the year of the big snow, and you laughed, because you were nineteen and the ferry only came twice a week.

The morning you found it, the bird was perched on the fence post at the end of the pier, its pale tail fanned out like a sheaf of papers somebody had dropped and forgotten. It looked at you the way the harbourmaster looks at a late invoice. Then it dropped off the post, flared over the water and climbed with the sun behind it, red light running along the edges of its feathers. It was so close you could see the yellow of its hooked beak was cracked at the tip.
You put your hand on the tiller and waited. Nothing in the boat was worth a fight. The eagle circled once, twice, then folded itself onto the rail of the *Morag Ann*, talons opening and closing on the wet wood like a man flexing his fingers before he lifts something heavy. The bait bucket sat by the hatch. The bird ignored it and looked straight past you towards the bay, as if the water owed it an answer.
Years later, when the ferry docked in Oban and you stepped off with a bag and no plan, a boy on the quay was selling postcards of wild birds, and there it was, black and grey, wings thrown wide across the card. You bought three and posted none. They live in the drawer where the tide tables go.
