Traditional leg and hand tattoos with black sneakers

Traditional · Calf · Mixed · Photo

Four legs in black canvas sneakers are shown from the shoes upwards, with two people's hands held together in the foreground. The legs carry traditional-style tattoos including skulls, roses, a palm tree and a compass, with bold outlines and some areas of shading. The ink is a mix of coloured areas in red, green and blue and darker grey shading, set against a beige carpet.

Nobody from Ashdown Comprehensive expected Maggie Rourke and me to turn up to the twentieth reunion together, let alone sit on the sports hall floor with our shoes off as if we were fourteen again. The buffet was a tray of curling sandwiches and an urn that made the tea taste of pennies, so we ignored it and talked about the summer we were going to sail to Madeira.

We had the plan written on the back of a chemistry worksheet: two pairs of black canvas plimsolls, one bus fare each way to Dover, and a brass compass Maggie had nicked from the junk shop on Cliff Road and swore was lucky. Mr Pardoe caught us drawing a palm tree on each other's ankles in biro and made us sit at opposite ends of the lab for a month. The boat never happened. Maggie went to Plymouth after a boy with a van, and I went to nursing college, and the compass ended up at the bottom of my jewellery box.

She pulled it out of her handbag that night, the glass cracked across one corner, the needle still shivering. "It was always pointing somewhere," she said. "That was the trouble." I told her I had kept the worksheet too, folded inside a hymn book for two decades, and we unfolded it on our knees and read our fourteen-year-old sums in the margins, the Madeira route in pencil, until we were laughing so hard the caretaker came in jangling his keys.

Outside, a coach idled in the car park with its engine running. Maggie stood, stepped into her shoes without bothering with the laces, and held the compass out to me like a question. I took it. The needle swung north, then towards the car park gate, then back to her, and I decided that counted as a yes.
