Black and grey roses on a thigh
Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
Two bare legs are shown, with large realistic roses shaded in black and grey covering the outer thigh of the right leg. On the left arm, a black and grey portrait of a woman's face is framed by a lace-like floral pattern. The soft shading, tonal range and smooth skin are clearly visible against a grey pavement background.

Mrs Okafor kept a rose in a green bucket on the ninth-floor landing of Hollin House, where the lift had been out since March and the council sign still said it was being looked at. Every Thursday she handed me the bucket and sent me down the stairs with it so she could sweep her step in peace. I was twelve and took it for a punishment. By August I had worked out it was a kindness dressed up as a chore.

The roses were the old heavy-headed kind, the colour of weak tea in the morning and of pencil shavings once the sun had gone off the balcony. She called them her husband's roses. He had grown them in a plot behind the bins before the flats went up, and she had carried cuttings across three estates in a shoebox, though she never said how many years that took. Nobody on the landing could remember what colour they had been to begin with.
Then her son Tunde came back from Southampton with a suitcase and a letter from an estate agent. He stood in the doorway looking at the bucket for a long time. Mrs Okafor said nothing at all. She just pointed at the stairs, and I went down with the bucket and set it beside the bin store, under the wall where some kids had painted a woman in a lace shawl, her eyes half closed as if she were listening to something far off.
The next Thursday the bucket was back on the landing, and there was a new bloom on it, pale as a photograph left too long in a window. Mrs Okafor didn't mention the stairs. She didn't have to.
