Traditional red flowers on the back of a hand
Traditional · Hand · Mixed · Photo
Two flowers with five red petals and black centres sit on the back of a hand, each surrounded by bold black leaf shapes with thin black stems. The black outlines are solid and even, and the red fills are flat with no shading. Other tattoos on the wrist and fingers are partly visible, and the photo is taken at an angle against a white cloth backdrop.

Dear Terry,

The red ones came up on the balcony this morning, the same red as the Post Office van, and I stood there in my dressing gown like a daft article shouting at the pigeons. You always said nothing would grow up here on the fourteenth floor. You were wrong, as you were about most things, including the lad from the flat below who never once paid his council tax.
Mrs Akhtar from twelve brought round a cutting of her black-leaved thing in a yoghurt pot and says it wants the sun more than I do. I told her I'd give it the corner by the bins where the wind can't get at it. She laughed. I have not laughed much since the lift broke in March and I had to carry the shopping up all eleven flights, with my hip going like a church bell.
I've put your old chisel on the sill to stop the door banging. You'll want it back, I expect. The kettle's still on the same hook. If you come Sunday there'll be jam sponge, and you can tell me what the men in that shop on Mill Road actually do with those needles, because I've decided it can't be as grim as you made out last time.
The flowers are out. Come and see them before the frost gets them.
Love, Mum
