Pink peony and rose leg tattoo

Traditional · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A bare leg rests on a yellow floral bedspread, showing a large tattoo of pink peonies and roses that wraps from the thigh down to the calf. The linework is bold and dark, with heavy black shadowing behind the flowers and leaves. Red, pink and green inks dominate, and the tea cup and cakes on the left sit outside the tattoo itself.

Dear Win,

The last of the peonies went onto the big cloth this morning, forty feet of them unrolled across the sawdust floor of the barn at Thrapston. Madder lake for the petals, a thick black shadow tucked under every leaf so they look as if they might lift off the canvas. Mr Hale stood at the back with his hands in his coat and said the crowds won't know the difference. They won't. That is rather the problem with crowds.

Supper was bread, dripping and the last tin of pears, eaten off the tailgate of the lorry because the caravan roof still lets rain in over the bunks. Dilys has been practising on the trapeze every evening since the tiger went to a farm in Wales. She hangs by her knees from the bare rigging with nobody below to catch her, counts out loud until she drops, then climbs back up and starts again. I told her the net was sold in October. She said she knows, she is only keeping her hands in.

I have one roll of cloth left, and a pot of red I was saving for something I could not name. This afternoon, while the others loaded the posters, I painted a single rose in the bottom corner of the backdrop, small enough to hide behind a crate. Nobody will see it once the canvas is folded and stacked, and I am not sure I wanted anyone to. It is the only bloom I have ever painted that was meant for me.
