Traditional rose within a hatched diamond
Traditional · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A traditional-style rose with a closed bud and layered petals sits at the centre of a hatched diamond outline. The bold black linework is filled with fine parallel hatching and solid black shading, leaving the petals and leaves as pale skin. The composition is centred, with the rose framed by the two triangular halves of the diamond, and other tattoo work is visible at the edges of the frame.

The fairground at Orchard Lane packed its last caravan the night the wind turned north, and only the old rose-man stayed behind to mind the wheel. He had a single rose he carried in a tin box, a closed bud the size of a thumbnail, wrapped in black paper. Children asked to see it and he never let them. He said it was not finished, and that a bud left unfinished would open in its own time or not at all.

The following spring a girl called Ada Penhallow came up the lane with a hatchet and a lantern, looking for work on the rides. She found the rose-man sitting on an upturned crate, sharpening a pencil with a knife. He told her the diamond was the shape the fair had always been drawn in, four corners pinned to the four winds, and that a rose set inside it could never be blown away. She asked how he knew. He said he had drawn the diamond in the dust every year for forty years and the wind had never once taken it.
He unwrapped the paper that night and showed her the bud. It had petals of pale cloth, layered tight, and dark shadow pressed into every fold, and the leaves beside it were cut in fine slanting lines like rain on a window. Ada held the lantern close. Then she took the pencil from his hand and drew the first petal open herself, and the rose-man laughed for the first time that year.
