Botanical · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A large open flower dominates the frame, with radiating petal lines around a central circle and several smaller flowers behind it. The man wanted the hours back, so Mabel Tierney sold him the last of her clocks instead. He paid in coal and a pair of brass dividers, and she took them because the stove was out. Behind her shop on Varley Street the old ropewalk had been turned into gardens by the council, and in the winter nothing grew there but one pale flower that opened only after the streetlamps went dark.

Her grandmother had called it the midnight bloom and said it grew from whatever a city forgot to count. Mabel had never believed her until the thaw. She walked the ropewalk with the dividers in her coat pocket and found the flower open wide, its petals as broad as cupped hands, a ring of dark stems radiating from a round heart. Smaller blooms crowded behind it, all of them grey at the edges, as if they were waiting their turn.
She set the points of the dividers to the first petal and counted them one by one, the way her grandmother had taught her. At the nineteenth petal the bloom closed like a shutter. When she turned round, the man from the shop was standing at the gate with his hat in his hands. He had not slept. Every hour he had lost, he said, was sitting on his chest like a stone.
Mabel opened the dividers to the width of a single petal. Sit down, she told him, and I will count them back to you, one at a time, and you will forget how many there were. Behind her the smaller flowers were already opening in the grey light, and somewhere across the city a clock that was not hers began to strike.
