Music note and clef heart on skin
Black and grey · Photo
A large quaver note runs diagonally up the right side of the image, with its flag curving down, and its stem extends into a heart shape made from a treble clef and a bass clef. Solid black ink lines and small filled dots give the design a clean, graphic look with no shading. The tattoo sits on a soft, evenly lit area of skin against a darkened vignette background.

The boats of Skerrow Haven went out on the ebb with no lamp lit, because the harbour-master had sold the oil that winter and nobody had the coin to buy more. Ada Greenlaw stood on the wall with her brother's fiddle under her chin and played the one tune she knew all the way through, a slow reel with a crook in its middle like a hook.

Out past the Nab the fog came down thick as wool. Eleven boats, and the men in them listened for the fiddle the way a child listens for its name. The sea swallowed sound and gave nothing back, so Ada tucked the bow close and played the low notes, the ones her mother had called the heavy bits, the notes that sit under a tune like a keel under a boat. Each time the fiddle dipped, the bass drew the boats down along the line of the wall toward home.
Her brother Jory came in last, rowing one-handed with the other wrapped in sacking. He stepped onto the slip and said the sound had turned the fog round on itself, so the men could hear where the harbour was and not where the rocks were. Ada said it was only a tune. He said that was what everyone said about anything that worked.
Next morning she found a quaver chalked on the harbour wall, its stem running down to a little heart of curled clefs, and beneath it a line of salt scratched into the stone. Nobody knew who had drawn it. The old men said the sea had a fondness for fiddlers, and the boats went out again, the lamp still unlit.
