Treble clef and music staff over watercolour wash

Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A large treble clef sits in bare skin at the centre of the design, surrounded by a black five-line staff with musical notes on the left and right. The background is a loose wash of purple, pink, blue, green and yellow with soft, blended edges that resemble watercolour. The composition fills the frame, and the clef's clean outline contrasts with the blended colour behind it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow had shut the pass by noon, and the Crown at Hollin Fell had one room with a working fire and a piano nobody had tuned since the war. I was the only guest who could play, which Mrs Ames, the landlady, took as a debt she expected me to settle before the sleet stopped.

Her grandson Tobias sat on the stairs with a tin of watercolour cakes, the lid dented and the reds worn down to pink. He painted the window while I played, wetting his brush on his tongue and letting colour bleed across the glass where our breath had fogged it. Every time I struck a wrong note he said the sky had caught a cold.

On the third night the power failed and the lamp became the only light. I played from memory, a tune my mother hummed over the washing line, and the notes came out of that tuneless piano like birds loosed from a cage. Tobias stopped painting and drew instead, five pencil lines across the back of an unpaid bill, with dots hopping from one line to the next. He said it was the only song he could read.

When the road reopened, he pressed the drawing into my hand, a great pale clef curling through the blue and violet he had smeared across the paper. I still have it. Mrs Ames says the pass has closed every winter since, and every winter some guest wakes before dawn to a tune that stops one bar short, as if waiting for someone to finish it.
