Yin yang on a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A yin yang symbol sits centred on the forearm, with a fine black outline around the circle and a solid black half containing a pale dot-and-tail curve. The black fill is even and dense, with a clean edge between the two halves. The photograph is taken at close range with the forearm filling most of the frame, and a grey sleeve is visible at the top.

The forme was locked up at quarter to eleven, and Ada Pell still had the wrong full stop between her finger and thumb. It had come off the foundry tray warm, a small black drop of type with a hairline ring cut round its face, and she had been turning it under the bench lamp since the night editor stopped shouting about the racing page. Behind her the big Heidelberg was ticking as it cooled, and the smell of hot metal and paraffin hung over the frames like wet coats.

Terry Lowe, sixteen and already tired of being told what to do, leaned over her shoulder. He wanted to know why she was keeping a stop when the obituary needed a comma after the name. Ada told him that in the old shop you never set one mark without its partner in the case, because the stop says a thing is finished and the comma says it is only resting. She took a comma from the box, the little pale curl with its tail, and laid it beside the stop on the stick. They leaned into each other like two people sharing a bench.

He set the line that way without asking again. When the proof came up wet from the rollers, the name sat on the page with a breath after it, and the sentence carried on into the next column as if the widow had only paused at her own front door before going in. Ada read it twice, then pressed her inky thumb to the margin. The print of it came out grey and round, with a pale notch where the stop had been, and she left it there for the machine to swallow.
