The officer at Dover waves the car forward and peers into the back seat, where a tartan blanket is knotted around two sleeping shapes. She asks what you're carrying, and you tell her it's two cats, which is true enough. Her torch finds a black tail and a white tail tangled together under the wool. She holds out her hand for the pet passport, and you pass over the folder with its soft corners, the vet's stamp blurred where the rain got in somewhere past Carlisle.

The cats belong to a neighbour who has gone to Lisbon for a job and couldn't take them. Marlow, the black one, has slept on the back of your neck since Tuesday. Pearl, the white one, refuses to sleep anywhere Marlow isn't, and the rescue in Hexham said they had come in together from the same litter and would not be split. You said you'd take both or neither, and the woman at the desk looked at you as if you were mad and then wrote both names down.

The scanner beeps twice, once for each chip. The officer reads the passport, looks at the cats, and then at you. She says they look like they have been together a long time. You say they have, and she lets it go, stamps the page, and hands the folder back without another question.

As the car rolls up the ramp onto the ferry, the sea lies flat and grey beyond the rail. In the mirror you see Marlow stretch one paw out from the blanket and lay it across the line into Pearl's half. Pearl doesn't move away. She only curls a little tighter, so that the two of them fit inside the same circle of wool.
