Dad drew the three shapes on a beer mat the night before the ferry, pressing so hard the biro tore the cardboard. A pine, a wave, a peak. If we got lost on Kilvane, he said, we should follow them in that order, and he would be waiting at the top of the last one with the kettle on.

The boat put us ashore in a squall. The castle on the headland had lost its roof centuries ago, and its empty windows framed nothing but low cloud. Mum wanted the hotel. I took the path instead, past a stand of pines bent flat by the wind, then down to a cove where the tide had left a dark line of weed across the sand like a stitched seam.

The climb to the peak took most of the afternoon. At the top there was a cairn, and wedged in its heart a tobacco tin with a folded page inside. His looping hand said only: You went the right way. Now look back.

I turned. Far below, the castle sat small on its rock, and through one of its arrow slits a torch was flashing in short, patient bursts. I counted them the way we once counted thunder, and sent back my own light.
